Johnny-come-lately or smart strategic move?
Falls Creek (Victoria, Australia) have opened this year with several new trails, as part of stage 3 of their MTB plan, that will make it worth your while to drive the 40mins up the hill, from Mt Beauty. The Falls Creek MTB trails network now boasts 25km of purpose built singletrack, and provides a solid base to expand from. The stage 4 trails to come next season (16/17) look to be even more impressive with a flow down trail, named ‘Flowtown’ to rival Mt Buller’s ‘Copperhead’. It does seem surprising that it has taken this long to provide a good summer product for the mountain, given that other resorts has put in place a solid network of trails over the last 10 years, but better late than never. The network is sure to attract riders from across the country and will only increase visitation numbers, as they continue to invest in the network.
What also works well with Falls Creek is the engagement of an experienced and tested trail builder – World Trail – to create challenging, interesting and enjoyable trails. Fresh off the back of the Alpine Epic in VIC and Atherton in QLD, the experience of building in an Alpine environment and working with multiple land managers, would have made the transition and delivery that much smoother with the Falls Creek build.
So what are the trails like?
I am looking forward to riding these trails in March 2016, but from first hand feedback, they have been well received and offer a complete alpine riding experience. – from lift assisted DH through to XC, and All Mountain trails. With time, visitor numbers will increase and will only add to the rich mountain bike riding culture that has developed in North East Victoria in recent years. Spearheaded by nearby towns including Bright, Mt Beauty and Beechworth, the riding is plentiful and worth the trip.
